I participated in #MarchforOurLives on March 24th, 2018.
I marched in Oklahoma City. My sister and parents live in Norman. My sister joined the March for Our Lives OKC Facebook group, tagged me on a post. I commented that I was a school shooting survivor on the post she tagged me on. A few minutes later, the student leader of the group messaged me via Facebook and asked me to speak at their rally. I accepted. I had never spoken in public about the shooting before.
A few weeks later, the March for Our Lives group in Bozeman asked me to speak. I thought about it long and hard, then decided to stick with OKC because my sister and parents would be there marching with me and supporting me.
My fellow survivor, Stephanie Simpson, spoke in Bozeman.
It was one of the most amazing experiences ever. I felt understood and supported. Watching the teenagers who organized this in action was incredible. Teenagers! Leading this movement! I’ll never forget it.
Most of all, though, I felt like I was FINALLY doing something to end gun violence.
